About

Dropbox Paper was a free collaborative document editor from Dropbox for team notes, meeting agendas, project briefs, and lightweight planning, with rich media embeds, comments, and assignable to-dos.

Dropbox Paper grew out of Dropbox's April 2014 acquisition of Hackpad, was announced in October 2015, entered open beta with iOS and Android apps in August 2016, and became generally available in 21 languages in January 2017. At its peak it was a clean, toolbar-free writing surface where teams could co-edit documents in real time, @mention colleagues, leave comments, and assign to-dos with owners and due dates. It was known for rich embeds (Dropbox files, images, YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify, SoundCloud and other links), tables, code blocks, timelines, templates, a presentation mode, and Markdown-style shortcuts, plus full edit attribution and version history. Paper was free for every Dropbox account. From September 2019 Dropbox began storing new Paper docs as .paper files inside the regular Dropbox file system and gradually migrated legacy docs out of the standalone paper.dropbox.com workspace into dropbox.com, where they now behave like other files. On October 9, 2025 Dropbox discontinued the Paper iOS and Android apps and the beta desktop app, leaving Paper only as a web document type inside Dropbox. This listing is kept as an archive entry for the standalone Paper product rather than as a current recommendation.
