About

The Archive is a native macOS note-taking app from the makers of Zettelkasten.de that stores every note as a plain-text Markdown file in a folder you control. It focuses on fast search, wiki-style links, and hashtags for building a digital Zettelkasten.

The Archive was created by Christian Tietze and Sascha Fast, the authors behind Zettelkasten.de, as a calm, distraction-free tool for practicing the Zettelkasten Method on the Mac. In the tradition of Notational Velocity and nvALT, it combines a single omnibar for searching and creating notes with an editor that highlights Markdown as you type. Notes are ordinary .txt or .md files in a folder of your choice, so they can be synced with iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive or any other service and edited with other tools at the same time; nothing is locked into a proprietary database. Wiki-style [[links]] act as searches, hashtags and saved searches let you slice your archive into working sets, and features such as image previews, tabs, typewriter mode, auto-completion of tags and links, and fully customizable themes round out the editor. Version 1.8 (2025) added a JavaScript plug-in system for automation, and version 1.9 added tag auto-completion. The app is sold as a one-time $19.99 license after a 60-day free trial, with v1 updates included and a discount promised for the planned v2. The Archive launched in March 2018 and is developed by Christian Tietze, a solo developer based in Bielefeld, Germany; the last stable release (v1.9.1) shipped in May 2025, and a redesigned v2 for macOS 26 is in development.
