About

FreeMind is a pioneering open-source mind mapping application written in Java. One of the earliest popular mind mapping tools, it offers fast keyboard-driven map creation and its .mm format has become a de facto standard supported by many other tools.

FreeMind is one of the earliest and most influential open-source mind mapping tools, first released in 2000. Written in Java, it runs on any platform with a JVM, making it truly cross-platform. FreeMind is designed for speed, with keyboard-driven mind map creation that allows rapid capture of ideas without reaching for the mouse. It supports folding and unfolding branches to manage large, complex maps, along with node links, icons, colors, and customizable edge styles for visual organization. FreeMind exports to a wide range of formats including HTML, PDF, PNG, SVG, Flash, XHTML, and OpenDocument. Its .mm XML file format has become widely adopted across the mind mapping ecosystem, with many other applications supporting import and export of .mm files. While active development has slowed since its last major release (1.0.1) in 2014, FreeMind remains functional, widely used, and freely available under the GPL-2.0 license.
